Virtual Studio Set 1 updated

Virtual Studio Set 1 free update

I’ve updated another one of my virtual studio sets over at VirtualStudioSets.com.

Studio 1 is one of the most popular virtual sets on the site, and I’ve given it a complete makeover! I’ve created loads of new layers and new opportunities to customize the set – the window frames and railings are now separate removeable layers, there’s adjustable reflection layers and all of the coloured lighting elements are now separate so you can adjust them individually in Photoshop to create infinite variations of your own.

The vMix versions now have two talent layers as standard, and I have re-named and regrouped all of the origianl layers to make it much easier to create new midground layers for the vMix sets using the full Photoshop versions.

More details, including a walkthrough video, can be found at virtualstudiosets.com/news/studio-1-update/

When the Future of Music got stuck in the Past

A picture of a mug with a funny slogan on it relating to MiniDiscs

I’ve still got two working MiniDisc players, plus a portable MiniDisc Walkman that I haven’t checked on recently, but I’d put money on it working just fine even after all these years.

I can’t help but feel a certain fondness for the MiniDisc format. Maybe it’s because of the countless hours I spent back in the 1990’s painstakingly naming every track on my MiniDisc archive of band recordings and rehearsals, plus all the many compilation discs recorded from my CD collection. It wasn’t easy, but it had to be done. It was also very important to make a full set of MiniDisc versions of all my mixtapes from the 1980’s.

Who knows how many hours I spent designing little covers for them. Or printing out tiny little tiny stickers for the edge of each MiniDisc, so I could find them more easily when scanning through a bunch of them on a shelf. And when I say ‘shelf’, I mean one of the shelves on the special MiniDisc case I made out of wood and screwed on to the wall next to the hi-fi. So yes – I’ve got many happy memories of the MiniDisc glory days.

I still think it’s a real shame that the MiniDisc format never really caught on though. What was once hailed as the future of digital audio recording, is now consigned to the dustbin of history. The Betamax of music.

Anyway, to keep the memory alive, and in the full and certain knowledge that the MiniDisc revival is just around the corner, I have added a few new designs to The Temple of MiniDisc – my online store where you can find lots of lovely t-shirts, hoodies, hats and loads more. Quality merchandise honouring the legacy of the greatest recording format of all time.

The Temple of MiniDisc is powered by Spreadshirt, at minidisc.myspreadshop.net.

Thanks!

AccuWeather weather icons

Weather icons for AccuWeather data

I’ve recently added another look-up table that maps my royalty free weather icons to AccuWeather data condition codes.

It’s a text file with tab separated values for the AccuWeather codes and descriptions and the corresponding file name from my weather icon sets. There are also a few notes regarding the symbols I have chosen for particular weather types, and possible alternatives that you might prefer to use.

Browse all the weather icon sets here. All of the mapping tables are linked under the ‘Weather Condition Codes’ heading.

BBC Weather Symbols. What do they mean?

Weather symbols. What do they mean (infographic)

Even though it’s been about fifteen years since I worked at the BBC Weather Centre, I’m still surprised at the number of emails I receive asking about the BBC weather symbols, and what they mean.

It’s quite interesting to get a glimpse into the kind of things that people find confusing. Even though the BBC weather symbols have been around for nearly 50 years now, it’s still a bit strange to discover that not everyone ‘gets’ them. For example – the fact that the symbols show the difference between ‘rain’ and ‘showers’ is still often misunderstood.

Ancient Designs and Arcane Symbols

Promotional image for Eldon Threads T Shirts. A girl wearing a tshirt with an unusual occult symbol

I’ve been busy over the past couple of weeks putting the finishing touches on our new website eldonthreads.com

It’s a brand new clothing store specialising in curious and esoteric T-shirt designs. They’re all inspired by pagan myths and sacred symbology. I like to think that I have drawn from my decades working as a graphic designer, and my love of things obscure, to make some decent looking tees. You know – for the more discerning customer.

We have some nice Occult T Shirts, Chalk Hill Figures T shirts and Folk Horror including a magnificent Vinegar Tom!

So, if you’re in search of something curious, quirky, and perhaps slightly baffling, make sure to visit our store. And have a browse!

Thanks for your time!

Did I mention my BAFTA?

Regular visitors to this site might have noticed that the blog entries have been few and far between recently. In fact, it’s been over a year since I posted anything here at all, and probably much longer than that since I mentioned my BAFTA.

Never mind Star Trek – did Trump just use my arrow for his Space Force logo?

Arrow logo from 2011 compared to Donal trump's new Space force logo

Donald Trump unveiled his new Space Force logo recently, and of course everyone immediately noticed a striking similarity to the Starfleet Command emblem from the Star Trek TV show. Quite right too.

But hang on a minute.

The one part of the new Space Force logo that’s quite different from the Star Trek version is the ‘arrow’ device in the centre. Which bears (I think!) an even more striking resemblance to this arrow I designed years ago as part of my free pack of Wind Icons and Arrows that you can still find on my page of weather symbols.
